In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

I know Lisa Maxwell to always be an imaginative, innovative, and inspiring author, based on her past work. I called Lisa's UNHOOKED a "well-written, exciting, and utterly captivating (read)", and upon the news of The Last Magician, I positively shivered with anticipation! Like Unhooked, The Last Magician presents a colorful plot that is sure to thrill it's readers. It showcases a present-day New York where magic is all but extinct, aside from a few Mageus' that live within the shadows, practicing in secret. Enter Esta, our female lead who is as talented as thieves come, and she's tasked herself to steal only the most magical of artifacts from the sinister Order of the Brink. And although a thief she may be, she possesses the incredible ability to manipulate time and plans to use it for the job of a life-time - to travel to the past and steal an ancient book containing all the secrets of the order.

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell was a magical wonder that I highly recommend to all! With it's diverse cast of characters and fearsome heroine, Lisa's latest completely blew me away. Esta was an intense character to get to know, but she quickly grew on me with her bad-ass attitude and strategic way of thinking. I additionally enjoyed watching her meet all sorts of colorful characters, and it was quite a thrill seeing where those new connections led her. I, also, positively adored and lavished in the world building, the rich history within it's pages, and the journey back in time - it was wonderful! I certainly feel that The Last Magician is the must read fantasy/time travel title of 2017, and cannot wait to read it's companion when it makes it's way into the world.

Stunning, captivating, and thrilling - Lisa Maxwell's The Last Magician is a must read for all fantasy lovers.
