Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

Usually, I try to forgo reading books that are overly-hyped until, at the very least, a couple of months have passed. The reason I typically do this is to avoid outside praise and opinion from clouding my judgement on a title. There are few exceptions from favorite authors or sequels, however Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone was one I couldn't prolong. The gorgeously descriptive and imaginative synopsis was promising, with a delicious tease of magic and fantasy. It beckoned me with new worlds, magic, impulsive and courageous characters, and a heroine unlike one we've read before - someone truly inspiring. Diving into Children of Blood and Bone, I was eager to get to know Zélie, and learn why critics are calling it "the next big thing in literature and film".

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi left me speechless and in awe. After pouring through chapter after chapter, and devouring it slowly over the course of three days, I knew Tomi Adeyemi's debut would leave a lasting impression on me. The West African inspired debut was brilliant and stunning. The care that Tomi took into creating Orïsha, the world in Children of Blood and Bone, was a marvel to witness. It was a unique and breathtaking fantasy setting, and it completely blew me away. It fed my inner booknerd to it's fill, and is one of the most stunning fantasy settings I've read this year.

Additionally the lore and magic was mesmerizing. It was fascinating to learn about the Maji, however also heartbreaking to learn about the mass killings ordered by the King. It hit very close to home and resembled the very inhumane treatment and injustice found in our own world. And even though the protagonist, the fierce Zélie, finds herself in the very middle of this injustice, she exceeds all expectation from others and rises above to not only bring magic back to Orïsha, but also strives to bring back balance and peace. Zélie was inspirational, cunning, and the absolute embodiment of strength.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi is groundbreaking. It's a book with world-shattering impact and is an absolute must read for lovers of diverse reads with a magically action-packed plot.
