Review: Consumed by J.R. Ward

That hand, Dear God ... her days as a firefighter were over.
It was what he had wished for all along.

But not like this.
He didn't want it to happen like this.

Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed...

By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.

Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.

Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.

Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

It's no secret - I'm OBSESSED with J.R. Ward, and even more so, the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

I first discovered the series a few years ago, right before the release of book 7, Lover Avenged. I immediately binge-read the entire series prior, that's books 1-6, and absolutely fell for J.R. Ward's unique world of vampires and an epic society of warriors. The now 17 long book series is one of my absolute favorites, and I always recommend it to lovers of suspense-filled paranormal romances. With that said, I was hooked to J.R.'s writing and began to explore her other titles. One after another, I devoured the Fallen Angels series and the Bourbon Kings series, only to fall deeper into the rabbit hole with her other titles under pen name Jessica Bird. When news of Consumed, the first installment in a brand new contemporary romance series from J.R. Ward, made it's way over to me, I was instantly sold. Something I've always admired about J.R. Ward is the bold, strong, and brilliant female characters she imagines, as well as the incredible worlds she brings to life. Consumed's Anne Ashburn was all the above, and I couldn't wait to binge read the book from beginning to end in one sitting.

"The entire building collapsed without warning, the three floors dominoing down, ash, soot, smoke, and flames joining the rush of dusted concrete, brick and mortar, that exploded out of the hole."

Before reading Consumed, I highly urge readers take a read through the first two prequel novellas, respectfully titled "The Wedding From Hell". It'll properly set the tone for Consumed, and will give you a far better understanding of Anne and Danny's relationship. When immediately diving into Consumed, I was blown away at how easily J.R. Ward was able to suck me into the tale. I was instantly plopped down into the scene between Danny and Anne and given an epic perspective on their chemistry together - I loved it! I couldn't resist following along with their budding relationship, their narrative with one another, and their strong feelings for each other. It was, honestly, very different from other contemporary romance's I've read before.

Romance aside, Consumed was filled with suspense. It felt very intense, and there was a series of epic twists and turns that kept me on my toes. The long chain of mystery and anticipation that consistently overlapped one another in Consumed definitely had me guessing to the very end. The overall sense of mystery combined with J.R. Ward's vivid and descriptive writing made me feel like I, too, was part of the scenes, along side them, piecing together every event and instance, hoping to get to the bottom of things. Lovers of unbelievably realistic suspense will surely love Consumed, if not for it's shocking twists than for it's incredible attention to detail.

Overall, Consumed was far more than a fluffy contemporary romance - it was real, intense, bold, and brilliant. Fans of J.R. Ward will be completely blown away by this newest title. I absolutely cannot wait for more in the Firefighters series, and can only hope that this will, someday, be optioned for television!
